The Reading Log

In 1984 I was a student at the University of British Columbia living in a shared house.  One day my housemate, a fanatical reader, showed me some old scrapbooks from her childhood.  These were her first reading logs, dating from about age eight.  For almost her entire reading life she had been recording the books she read.  The next day I took the bus down to Chinatown and bought a diary to use as my own reading log.

So this is a log, not a blog. I plan to transcribe my reading logs here, about a quarter century’s worth of reading, roughly two pages at a time, starting from the beginning.  The logs are merely a dated list of books I’ve finished reading.  I give no commentary.  If I don’t finish a book in its entirety, I usually don’t list it, or I fess up about how many pages I actually read.  The log has had the effect over the years of making me a very tenacious reader.  I will generally make it to the end of a book because, if I give up, I can’t put it in my log.  (If I’m going to give up at all, it will be in the first few chapters.)

Something you won’t be able to tell from reading these lists is that my reading log also functions as a sort of diary, which is something I don’t keep.  I often remember where I was when I read a particular book, and how I was feeling at the time, just by looking at the log.  The books have somehow merged with my past.  Curiously, I sometimes don’t remember the book, but I remember how I felt reading it.
